Self-Organization Phenomena in Pedestrian Crowds
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pedestrian crowds can very realistically be simulated with a social force model which describes the different influences affecting individual pedestrian motion by a few simple force terms. The model is able to reproduce the emergence of several empirically observed collective patterns of motion. These self-organization phenomena can be utilized for new flow optimization methods which are indispensable for skilful townand traffic-planning.

Simulation of Pedestrian Crowds in Normal and Evacuation Situations
Starting with a short review of the available literature in the field of pedestrian and evacuation research, an overview is given over the observed collective phenomena in pedestrian crowds. This includes lane formation in corridors and oscillations at bottlenecks in normal situations, while different kinds of blocked states are produced in panic situations. By means of molecular-dynamic-like m...
متن کاملComputer Simulations of Pedestrian Dynamics and Trail Formation
A simulation model for the dynamic behaviour of pedestrian crowds is mathematically formulated in terms of a social force model, that means, pedestrians behave in a way as if they would be subject to an acceleration force and to repulsive forces describing the reaction to borders and other pedestrians. The computational simulations presented yield many realistic results that can be compared wit...
متن کاملThe principle that generates dissimilar patterns inside aggregates of organisms
Pattern formation and self-organization are phenomena that occur across the board, in animate and inanimate systems. In this paper, we rely on the constructal law to explain the generation of patterns (shapes, structures) in aggregates of organisms – pedestrian crowds and stony corals. In pedestrian crowds a variety of patterns are often observed, from ‘chaotic’ appearances to spontaneous organ...
متن کاملFrom Crowd Dynamics to Crowd Safety: a Video-Based Analysis
The study of crowd dynamics is interesting because of the various self-organization phenomena resulting from the interactions of many pedestrians, which may improve or obstruct their flow. Besides formation of lanes of uniform walking direction and oscillations at bottlenecks at moderate densities, it was recently discovered that stop-and-go waves [D. Helbing et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 168001...
متن کاملCellular Automaton Approach to Pedestrian Dynamics - Theory
We present a 2-dimensional cellular automaton model for the simulation of pedestrian dynamics. The model is extremely efficient and allows simulations of large crowds faster than real time since it includes only nearest-neighbour interactions. Nevertheless it is able to reproduce collective effects and self-organization encountered in pedestrian dynamics. This is achieved by introducing a so-ca...
